TR4/4A TR4 Dashboard Paint

Hello

Bit of a nerdy question, but can anyone recommend the type of paint I should use for my TR4 dashboard? I want to paint it a semi-gloss black (rally style) instead of the white however I don't know if I should be putting on a clear coat, a regular enamel or what. I plan to paint the steering column, air vents etc in the same paint. Any advice out there?

Thanks

Myles

Never did this but considering the visiblity of the results and the potential for wear & abrasion you might consider having it powder-coated.

Get some semi-gloss or matte black. Spray and sand and spray until you get the desired smoothness. If you clear coat, you will need a flattener, or try sanding with 3000 grit paper. I would do the matte black.

Please, please, no question on this forum is
nerdy. Continue to consult, that way I'll feel better
about the kinds of things I ask.

I painted my windscreen with Krylon paint. Seemed to
work pretty good; dries fast; seemed rather easy to work
with; inexpensive. Don't know how it will hold up on the dash, though. Comes in gloss; semigloss; flat and
semiflat. It's like pick a finish.

Best wishes,

Krylon is a nice product. I have gotten very good results using a rattle can. As with the more expensive auto paints, the final finish is all in the preparation. Krylon is relatively cheap, so buy each of the finish types, spray of some scrape sheet metal, make the choice then go for it.
