TR4/4A TR4 Clutch

Last winter I bought a TR6 O/D gearbox to convert the car to O/D and I started to overhaul it, but other priorities took over. I intend to finish the job this winter and install it. While the box is out I will replace the clutch assembly. As TRF is running a clutch special, now is probably the time to stock up on parts.

I understand that the 4 clutch is more robust than the 4A and later, so should I stick with that or upgrade to a later version? I have a spare flywheel that I believe is from a 4A.

I am a bit confused given all the different options available.

Seems to me that there are a whole lot of people having a whole lot of trouble with TR6 clutches; while stories of troubles with the TR2-4 clutch are few and far between. So I don't see the TR6 clutch as any kind of "upgrade", other than being smaller and lighter than the TR2-4 unit. If "robust" sounds good to you, my advice is to stick with the earlier clutch.

That said, I switched to a TR6 clutch on my TR3A (in conjunction with the alloy flywheel) and it worked fine for me.

Ian, I have a 72 TR6 Gearbox in my 4A. After some research I went with the Magic Clutch kit from TRF, and I'm very happy with the results.

What year is the TR6 gearbox?

Regards,

Michael
