TR4/4A TR4 Carpet Comparison

Both TRF and Moss offer the early TR4 original-style loop pile gray ("salt and pepper") carpet. I'm aware that TRF's version had fading issues for a while and I presume that has been fixed. Normal cost difference between the two is about $30, but with Moss' current sale (due to expire on Monday), the difference is about about $65, something to consider.

How do they compare for fit, finish and originality?

I have done two TR4'S with the TRF kits. I found them too be very good. No experience with the Moss kit.

I've used both and both were well made and fit fine. I'll give a slight edge to details of the TRF set as I think they had an additional protective pad at the dipper switch (which I transferred to my Moss kit) and the stitching looked better in some areas (like that curved binding where the flat floor of the rear section goes over the hump [Moss' stitching had some pucker there]). I did experience the fading you mention with the TRF carpet - both the original and a replacement piece they sent for the tunnel. Hopefully this has been resolved because it was just awful (not really fading but a color change to a shade of orange).

It is interesting that one never sees repop rubber flooring for the TR4A. We purchased our 1967 TR4A in September of 1966 new in St. Louis. It is white with black interior. It has pile carpeting from the front of the seats to the rear of the interior. Both sides of the front had rubber flooring with snaps holding them in place. I still have at least one of them in very fragile condition.

Too bad really. Would certainly be popular for those who want to be 100% correct and actually a practical alternative if it was made out of something more durable than that thin material of the originals.

The front mats for TR3s were unavailable for decades until someone (TRF as I recall) made some.

TRF does make the original style mats for the TR3. See:

Would they fit the early TR4s?

Have you checked Skinner? Beautiful carpets and competitive $$. ( no interest, just satisfied customer)

Thanks Jim, for the Skinner recommendation. I'm well aware of their products as I am, at the moment, installing one of their interiors in my TR3. I think they're the best. Interestingly, I don't think they offer the original "salt and pepper" carpet, which is one reason I asked. I stand to be corrected, however.

Thanks to all for the feedback.
