Any tricks to getting a TR4-6 door to fit properly? I am in the process of replacing the weatherstripping on the doors on my 4A and what I thought was a weatherstipping problem seems to be a door fitting problem.

I thought my weatherstripping was too thick, as both doors were difficult to shut. I knew this had been a problem with some of the weatherstripping supplied by the big 3, so I assumed it was my problem. After replacing the weatherstripping on one door, I realized it made no real difference, even though the new weatherstripping was thinner than the stuff I removed.

Some investigation led me to believe that the fit of the doors, at the leading edge, is where the problem is. It seems that the doors are too close to the body at the leading edge.

Before I start loosening the bolts on the hinges, and attempting a little adjusting, I was curious if there are any tricks of the trade I should know.

Cheers!

Before you start loosening the hinges etc tell us exactly what you are trying to fix. It sounds like you want to move the door back some because of your comment about the leading edge of the door being too close. Have the doors ever been off of the car?
Is the gap at the rear of the door too large? If that's what you are trying to fix it may not be the doors but rather the rear of the body has sagged. Not an unusual occurance and is fixed by adding shims to the rear of the body. Much of the door adjustment actually comes from adding or removing door shims.

So, please explain in more detail what exactly your door problem is and maybe we can help.

The leading edge of the door isn't too far forward, it seems to be too close to the body and the leading edge of the door binds against the body making the rear of the door tough to close.

The leading edge shouldn't touch the body. If it isn't and the problem is that the trailing edge is out too far or the door doesn't want to close without an effort check the receivers on the body near the striker (door opening) that the tongue on the door itself inserts into when closing. The receiver has a plate that the tongue contacts and the plate should slide inward. Sometimes due to rust and debris the plate become stuck. Lubricate it with penetrating oil and possibly push on it with a screwdriver or tool of choice to free it up. It might then allow the door to close properly.
