TR2/3/3A TR3Clutch Release Bearing

I had bought a new release bearing years ago from one of the big 3. It was packed with a heavy grease so that the bearing was difficult to spin. The Release bearing I had been using was still good so I didn't use the stiff one and just put it in with my TR3 spares. Currently I'm replacing broken clutch fork pins on my TR3 and TR4A:concern::indecisiveness: and am thinking of using this release bearing with the thick grease. Anyone come across a release bearing that seems to barely spin? Is this even an issue or will it free up engine and trans heat?

Hey Karl,

The force of the clutch fingers on the bearing is several hundred pounds, so the bearing will turn and will loosen with use. So, that aspect would not concern me in the least.

The only concern is how long the bearing sat. Grease is oil suspended in a "soap". Over time, the lighter components of the oil evaporate, leaving only the soap, which is not a very good lubricant by itself. We've all seen when grease ends up hard and cakey..like a hard wax.

If your bearing was sealed, it should be fine indefinitely. If it was unsealed and sat for a decade or so, the grease has likely hardened. In that case, the cost of a new bearing is small enough not to risk the mounds of labor involved installing it. Best to replace it, then.

Even this "sealed "bearing will accept grease if you clean it in ATF then work in a good hightemp grease by pressing it into the tiny gap at the edge of the race. Of course if you walk into a bearing supply house and set it on the counter they will sell you a brand new one for less than 15$.....
