TR2/3/3A TR3a trunk repair questions

Hi guys - any tips or tricks to replacing the trunk, sorry boot, floor in a 3A? Looks like the whole section needs to be replaced, and I was wondering if there if any one replacement panel fits better than another?

What do you say guys?

Did mine with a TRF replacement panel and the fit was pretty good. The biggest problem is the spare tire panel. I will have to weld that back on when I take the body off the car. A plasma cutter made cutting out the old easy and then, I just ground down the spot welds until they were thin enough to chisel out the remaining steel. I was almost tempted to glue the thing in, it layed in so easy. You will find lots of dum dum near the back valence and far fewer welds back there then you would think.

I bought my boot floor panel (post 60k) from Moss, and it fit very well. I used one of those $20 pneumatic body saws from Harbor Freight to cut out the panel in sections. I see that they now have an electric version for $30 in case you don't have an air compressor. I cut around the spare tire flange and removed most of the floor, and then tackled the remaining steel welded to the flange. By then, you will need support underneath. I drilled the spot welds, as I had for most of the others during the resto. Also, the new floor will go in the boot in one piece, even though first attempts may seem otherwise.
 
Thanks guys - did you lap weld the new panel on the remaining metal from the original floor? Any need to brace the rear section as with doors while doing this?
 
Anybody save pictures? Mine is next. Rust in apron too and looks easier if that goes too. Tom
 
I lapped new panels on mine. To deal with heat distortion, weld an inch, move 6 inches away and weld another inch. Wait 15 minutes and do it again. Tedious, but...

You would also be well advised to drag it into this century with the use of metal bonding adhesive.After all it holds the modern planes together.....
The most recent one I have done got the spare tyre well bonded to the new floor, with the balance mig welded.By the time the welding is complete the adhesive has set and life is easier, with zero chance of corrosion on the joint.

Hi Tom,

No, my trunk floor was pretty good fortunately. I only had to repair two small areas where the closing panels on the bottom attach to the trunk floor underneath.

Wish that I had some pictures for you to help. The only ones that might be of some use are the pictures with the rear valence removed. This would give you an idea of the contoured edges at the rear of the floor pan that fit around the inside of the rear valence. Let me know if you need those.
