TR3A top cover to mounting flange "strap"?

I just noticed in the Moss catalogue diagram of the gearbox that there is a strap, part 82 #031-652,that connects the top cover to the mounting flange. I dont recall seeing this on my 3 and was wondering if this "strap" is the forerunner of the rear transmission counterweight on the TR4's??? If this strap was installed would it help stop the vibrational buzzing of the gearbox shifter lever? I've tried all the usual fixes discussed on this forum to stop the annoying buzzing to no avail. Maybe this strap was initally installed to stop such vibration? Any thoughts? Also ....anyone have a pic of the mounting flange on the frame that strap bolts to? Thx Karl

I think thats right, the strap came before the counterweight. With counterweight setups you typically see both installed.

The strap does not bolt directly to the frame, it just sits on the top of the geabox flange that is bolted down to rear rubber mount and then to cross-frame. It is a simple add on if you can find one. The bolt goes through both strap and gearbox flange. Hope that wording makes sense, not sure what else to call those bits.

Karl - I never had one on my 1958 TR3A. I bought it brand new in May 1958 (TS 27489 LO). In fact, I've never seen one on any TR3A - even the late one I restored for Frank in Toronto (TS 81551 L).

As for the rattle, a dealer service bulletin had a solution that I tried 20 years ago & has never been an issue since.

I've pulled many of them off over the years. I put some of them back on but most I left off. Have a couple if any one wants one. I couldn't ever tell any difference.

Here it is on my TR4:

I re-installed it on the assumption that STC didn't spend 10d if they didn't think they had to.

Re: TR3A top cover to mounting flange "strap"?

Karl, I had this same problem of the gear shifter vibrating on my 1959 TR-3A.
I tried all the tips on quieting it down.
What I finally discovered was that the source of the vibration problem was the engine itself.
The engine was out of tune. The carbs were out of synchronization and the distributor was out of timing.
I think you may need to go over your engine and make sure everything is correctly setup. I hope this helps.
