TR2/3/3A TR3A rear end ratio

This probably an age old question but couldn't you change the rear end ratio to help lower the engine RPM instead of having to have an overdrive tranny?
Seems like you shift a lot and don't go anywhere.
 
Tallest gears anyone makes for the stock diff are 3.45; only about 7% different than the original 3.70. To get taller, you'd need to do a conversion. For the equivalent of an OD, you'd need gears around 3.0; which would result in less acceleration plus likely increased clutch wear.
