Would anyone have an actual photo looking down at the wiring in the engine bay on the right wheel well?

Mine is quite a hodge-podge. I wondered how a "restored" or "original" TS47xxx would look. I've got some excellent pics now of engine bays, but they don't really show a closeup of that area.

My harness wiring seems relatively correct (color, gauge, etc.) but several are disconnected at the front, and the leads to the headlamps and front parking/turning lamps are all spliced to small-gauge all-red wires.

Thanks.

Tom,

Wow, it looks like it's all been replaced with non original wiring. You may need to get a complete harness including front lights and directionals? How's the other side look, Sorry, this is all I have for a picture of the passenger side harness connections. The 2 grounds are under the bundle you see in the pic with bullet connectors connected to the flat area directly below what you see. black wires to ground. Remember, I have a post 50K car so I get kind-a reluctant to comment when we're talking originality.

Hi Tom:

I have sent you a PM regarding some pictures. Let me know.

Tom,
If you promise not to notice how scruffy my engine compartment is this may help:

My wiring harness is ALL red thanks to the Dpo. But working.
For now, at least.

You guys are superb! No way would I know what this looked like "back in the day". Thanks!

As my starter is working just great now, my next long-term project is the engine bay. I plan to clean up the engine and ancillaries, and then repaint the bay the original Signal Red. Whatever surface is there now won't clean off - it's like a full surface cover of some kind of primer.

I'll probably do the painting by hand (brush?).

After all this, put in a full wiring harness, with the fabric wrapping like in these pictures.

I've now got my main beam indicator working, and just need to solve the "no backup lights" problem to get past state DMV and get the car registered and legally driveable.

Thanks again.
Tom

I always thought that if a car didn't have something originally - like back-up lights - then no law could require that you put them on. I'm not a lawyer in your state, but if laws could be made retroactive to all old vehicles, why don't we have to put air bags and catalytic converters on our TRs or on old Ford Model Ts.

My TR came with no seatbelts. But I was required to have them and use them when I started to rally it in 1959. So now that I have them in the car, I have to be wearing them just because they are there now.

If you have a back-up light hanging there which doesn't work, take it off so it'll be like it was when it was originally manufactured.

I don't have a back-up light or outside mirrors, because it came that way.

Here's another look (from TS47905L)...

Wiring-2.JPG

You can see the double bullet connector used for grounds on both wings. These may be NLA but I have made one from the sheet metal of an old taillamp bulb (nickel plated brass I think). If you're a bit crafty you can get it to look very close to the original part.

In any case, I recommend a new harness to anyone working with a Chef-Boy-Ardee wiring loom.

PS: That nut on the front of the dynamo mounting bolt shouldn't be there. Can't remember if I had to do that or just put it on there for good luck.

What back-up lights?? There are none on a TR3. They didn't show up until the TR4, and then it was an option on the early ones. Is the DMV telling you that you have to retrofit back-up lights??

Thank the lord for the simple inspection here in the county I live in Utah. All you need is tail lights, brake light, turn indicator lights {If the vehicle came with them only} high and low beam headlights, winscreen wipers, good brakes {if the vehicle did not originaly have seat belts there not required} and best of all NO emissions testing here. YET! Oh I forgot reasonably good tires too!
But yes ....... If you add a light or seatbelt on ..... it has to work.

re: backup lights

Another member here, who also lives in Connecticut, had advised me about the high beam indicator and backup lights being needed to pass inspection. I haven't actually called our DMV about that; I'd rather take a beating than call our DMV ....

I'll check with that other member. Maybe I just misunderstood.

That be me,

CT DMV can be very interesting depending on who the inspector is. They may require back-up lights to be installed. Definitely seat belts, and I was actually questioned about the windshield washer nozzle non-operation on my 3. I told him it was an option and he said if it's installed It has to work. I told him the only thing installed is the nozzles and feed hose. The pump button was removed as well as the bottle. It had a plastic bag attached to a wire type harness screwed on to the left side inner fender well made by Anco I think. I hooked up a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle to the rubber hose and when he asked to see it work I squeezed the bottle and the water squirted out and I passed. He never once looked at the frame and he tested the brakes by having me put it in second gear with the e-brake on and let out the clutch slow. If you rolled you failed. I may have accidentally /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif put it in fourth. They have a written checklist they are required to go through and if it's on the list some inspectors are adamant that it has to be there and work. Others are not so. You should have seen him looking for the second VIN number. The checklist says the car must have two VIN numbers for verification. TR3 only has one. I must have repeated that line for twenty minutes when finally he said I guess your right it only has one. I honestly had a lot of fun with all my CT DMV inspections. You just do whatever they ask and it all works out. You just need to have patience and understanding

Hey Tom and Harry...are you guys going to Harkness Park on June 3rd to meet Kodanja and me at the British Car Show? We might even squeak a few more guys out of CT and RI if they know that you are coming.

Check the calendar on this site to get a registration form.

Yeah, I know it's an MG club, but they can't help themselves and they run a good show.

Paul,

Weather permitting I plan on going this year.

At this time it will be in the new convertible though as I am bringing some excess luggage. Wife, kids, friend of kid, brother and sister in law, their kids, lost sister in law, her kid, etc. etc. etc. Gonna look like a band of gypsies. Harkness staff will probably close the gate when they see us coming. It should be fun. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

From April through September I work weekends as a "teacher" in historic farming practices, agriculture, and gardens at Old Sturbridge Village.

www.osv.org OSV website.

I'm interested in that VTR2007 down near Philadelphia, as it's during the week, as well as any other activities I can find that don't conflict with work.

And I want to *drive* my TR to them!

Tom

Harry,

Same for me with the weather, with an hour and a half drive to get there. Hopefully it will be nice and we can all get together face to face, or make an "eyeball contact" as we used to say in my Ham Radio days.

Tom,

Sorry to hear that you can't make it. I love Old Sturbridge Village. Especially the bake shop and the rolls.....

Paul - you ain't had nothin' til you've 'et my parsnips and rutabagas! Ayup!

Seeded and grown the "old fashioned" way, no less, ayup!
