TR2/3/3A TR3A Liners Replacement

Later this morning a friend will help me measure the bores in the TR3A. I believe these are original to the engine and though the mileage is unknown it is fair to say 'a lot'.

I'm expecting the results to present a compelling case for new liners & pistons.

It seems that 83, 86 & 87mmm sets are readily available so my question is: Is there any reason I would not got with a larger bore?

Are the larger bore liners more prone to overheating? I have never had an overheating issue in the past but do like to drive all year which means many 100° days.

Will I have to change the stock TR3A distributor to a TR4 distributor or can I get by with simply tuning (possibly less advance?) to get suitable performance?

Am I likely to need premium fuel if I go bigger (was always able to run regular in the engine before but that may have been because it was a bit worn).

I am not one to be overly concerned about performance but I do get to drive fast & far from time to time. Never felt underpowered with the stock engine but seems a shame to walk away from a chance for a little more grunt.

I'm aware of the 89mm sets but am not inclined to pursue that. I am not planning on changing the cam or doing any other performance enhancements, if that matters.

No reason not to go bigger. I'd say stay with the current distr if its was working well. I have two sets of new in the box 86 MM pistons and liners if you are intersted in a set. Should not be a problem with heat either if engine was running normal. Freshen up the head and put it back together,

And may even cool better, since you will be able to really clean the inside of the block. I'm sure I about doubled the water capacity in my block once I removed all of the rust!
 
Oops, never mind. A thorough measurement of the bores showed almost no ovalness and taper -- both are well within spec as is piston to bore clearance.

At this time I am hopeful that new rings will put me right with the world.

Somewhat anti-climactic as I had the steel rod and 3# hammer on the bench in anticipation of the task.
 
Aaaawww...always a letdown when you don't have an excuse to add new parts to your car.
