TR2/3/3A TR3A from Poland

Hello everyone,

I'd like to share a story of a 1959 TR3A that me and my dad are restoring in our workshop. We imported the car from States in 2007. It was mostly complete and didn't look that bad but striping everything down obviosly showed a different picture. Anyway we started to work on the car around August 2010 and restoration is still in progress.

Here is the picture of how the car looked like in 2007 when it was listed on ebay (unfourtunetly the hard top was not included):

At the moment we've got the body work done, I'm slowly preparing the car for painting. Engine I assembled after rebuild so is the second gearbox (the one that originally came with the car was not really in shape to be rebuild) and I'm working on the chassis and suspension.

Some more pictures can be found in here:

I do have a question regarding the rear axle rebound buffer. I checked all the books I have and search the web but couldn't find a proper picture or even a piece of information how to wire the buffer to the axle. I anyone could give me some advice on that it would be great. Thanks!

Adam

P.S.
Excuse me for my english, I don't have a chance to practice it to often.

Adam welcome...and don't worry about your English.
We are use to it.
We have several from the deep south and some of them are hard to understand!

Welcome!

The knobby parts go up and down. I used two stainless steel tie wraps on each buffer, one on each side of the knobbly. Got mine from Harbor Freight - Item #92515.

I have the buffer already in place but I'm simply not sure how to use the wires keep everything in position. Should I make a loop around one side of the buffer and then put the loose end of the wire under the nut that holds the buffer strap?

I'm trying to sort out the way it was originally designed to work.

Welcome to the club. I'm not sure this picture is good enough, but you can see how I did mine.

They were put on with tie wirer one piece on each side of the bumper. They just twisted the wirer tight. It sound too easy, but that is how it was done. It takes some practice, but bring the wirer around by hand and give it a nice even twist when the two wires met, perhaps twice, then trim the ends so they are about an inch long. Now take some pliers and pull back and twist at the same time until you get about four uniform twists. Ask a carpenter or ironworker to show you.

Again, Harbor Freight.

Perhaps these pictures will help. Looks like you are making great progress on your car. Cheers, Mike

Thanks for that last picture. Using 2 wires one on each side of the buffer is a solution but I still wonder what was the original way of fitting it. I've got same wires that are shown on enclosed picture and catalogues I checked state that there are only 2 required per car. But I'm considering upgrading to two wires on each side or straps as you sugested.

Adam if you PM me with your email address I can send you a picture from my 56 when I took it apart. It's to large to post here, and if I shrink it you may not be able to see the detail. It shows the two wires and the clamp, and welcome to the forum.

The originals were like hession potato sack wire ties - gripper eyelets at each end of the tie as shown in the parts drawing, that could be twisted up manually or mechanically.

Black plastic cable ties make a modern substitute.

Where in Poland are you? I have a good friend that lives in Wroclaw. He teaches English at the High School and College level. I've visited a few times myself. Spent a few days in Krakow as well.

Actually I am from Wroclaw, but as you know it's not that small city so probably we didn't have opportunity to meet. Which college he is teaching at? Hope you liked it here.

He taught at a few different schools. I asked him for a list. If you knew a Mr. Schock. You may know him.

I'm sure you'll recognize this photo too.

I've been to Wroclaw a few times. The first was in 2000 for my friends wedding.

I have a few friends that use to go to this schools, I'll ask if they know him.

I've made some progress with the TR. Front suspension in slowly put in place.

Some other parts came back from sand blasting(actually they were blasted with micro glass ball) and are prepared for painting with a clear paint (along with some parts form a Mini we're working on as well). Other details will be powder coated in black or zinc plated.

Sorry for pictures quality, I left the camera at home today, only had phone along.

Couple of things put into place today. Front hubs with bearing and brake discs assambled together, new brake pipe from front to rear put into place and I also did some other small things.

While I was looking for the bearings hidden in some box today I reminded myself that there are some parts that I'm missing. Maybe somebody could with these. When we bought the car it was lacking both of the dust shields. I know everything will work without them but still it would be nice to put them in place. The other thing are the carbs. I do have both of them, they are already rebuild but there is a but. Pistons are not the same and also the y do not go down with the same speed when lifted inside the carb. Probably it will cause some real pain to adjust the carbs so I'm looking for a pair of pistons and dashpots in a reasonable condition or at least an advice which other (if any) SU carbs I might use as parts donors.
