TR2/3/3A TR3A Door Handle Latch Part Needed

Aloha All,

I was looking into why the door not opening and closing properly. That was easily fixed when I discovered that the door check mounting plate had come loose from the door, which also explained the loose screw I found on the floor of the car. So, since the inner working of the door were exposed I decided to lube the latch mechanism and repair the lock in the door handle. All that went well and I was able to remove the lock barrel and modify it to work with the key for the glove box and boot lid. Reassembly presented a new problem. There is a round cylinder of cast pot metal about 9/16" in diameter and about 1/2" high with a square hole through the center to fit over the 5/16" square shaft of the door handle. This part also has one external lobe so that it fits into door latch operating mechanism. When you turn the door handle this bit serves as a bearing for the square shaft and converts the rotary motion to a lateral motion pulling on the door latch and opens the door. This part fractured into four pieces and I have not found a source for a replacement. Anyone have a source for one of these?

I'm not an expert on TR3s but I may have a used part. Can you post a picture of what you need.

Dave, I have a complete handle that has that part on it, I'm not sure I would try to press this part off the shaft. I might get more than 4 parts. The handle seems to have excellent chrome for a driver, (no pitting). Let me know if you want it, about $15 plus shipping or we can work something out.

Aloha Wayne,

Thanks for the offer. I send you an e-mail to coordinate the details. I'll post a few photos this weekend so everyone can see what I'm talking about, I have to take the pictures first.

Here's a photo of the late TR3A I finished in 2006.

In the photo above, I had to buy new door handles because the studs broke off as in the photo below. But the chromed handle outside was so pitted it needed to be replaced anyway. I'll see if I can "extract" the circular piece with the point on it for you.

Aloha Don,

Excellent photos of the parts connecting the door handle to the door latch. None of the usual TR parts suppliers show those items in their catalogs diagrams or list the bits for sale. I would greatly appreciate your help in providing that part. I'll send you an e-mail to make arrangements.

I have found that a sill cock key may be the start of cobbling together a replacement part.

After cutting it to the right Lent, I Think if I add a split pin to act as the cam lobe.

I wouldn't mind installing new ones, if they could be found. Mine are in pieces too.

What I found, however, is that the pieces work just fine when reinstalled in their place and then held by the push-on retainer. Super glue might also be a decent solution to make the pieces more-or-less one again. I didn't bother, because the cam stays put and works as it ought to without it.

The bit I want to replace in the part the fits over the square shaft of the door handle. Here is a photo showing it mounted on the shaft:
