in the advance curve of the dizzy between the 83mm and 87 mm (or was it 86mm that was the optional upgrade) motors? What dizzy number is on the typical 59 TR3A with the larger displacement. Kind of a moot point since I'm sending my dizzy to Jeff at Advance but I'm just curious. There is another TR3A owner on another forum that is also trying to resolve a sputtering TR3 problem and he like many others is replacing all kinds of major ignition and carb parts when I believe issues of this kind can often be traced back to dizzys that have been changed out or not modified to meet engine upgrades.

Aloha Karl,

Jeff is an excellent source of info and I bet he would respond to a question from you.

In the meantime here is a website that also has lots of information:

https://members.tripod.com/mini_digest/ignition.htm

It contains an article "Tuning the Lucas Distributor" by Marcel Chichak. It contains information about identifying the model of the distributor and where to look for marking that show the maximum mechanical advance plus much more.

There is also a Lucas Distributor Database that list various models used in many British cars and the has the advance curve characteristics of many applications. It is a large data base, but I'm sure it contains the answer to your question. Look on page five, the original was probably a model DMP4 distributor, but several have been replaced by model 25D.
