TR2/3/3A TR3A Body Back on the Frame

On Saturday my Father and I managed to get the body back on the frame. It was first removed on January 28 2008. During that time it was blasted (May), repaired (June-July), and painted (August). But enough with the chatter...

We still have a bit of engine work remaining, including polishing the carbs. Wiring is probably next, followed by the dash.

Major milestone!

Feels good, doesn't it?

I can almost get to my washer and dryer now! Woo-hoo! Clean clothes!

For about 30 minutes after the body went on we just sat there saying "It's a car... Yep..."

But it definitely feels good to have it back on the frame. It was easy, in the beginning, to predict that it would eventually go back on, but the work it takes to actually get it there is not so easy to predict. Every part on the car has been restored in some way, either painted, blasted, rebuilt, cleaned, or purchased anew.

For two guys who only work on it for about 8 hours each Saturday, and who have no previous experience building cars, it feels like it's finally coming together.

Good on you!

NO, NO, NO, you are doing it all wrong and you will mess it up for everyone else. You take the car apart and inject it with Shipwrights disease so that it takes years to get it right. You move house one or two times while slowly (key word) working on it. Only then do you think about putting it back together.

Seriously, congratulations, it is looking good.

Cool !!! You will be driving it sooner than you think!

If I were the jealous type, I'd be. -And maybe I am.

It looks great and I'm proud of you both. That cart looks funny without the tub on it. Congrats. I'll celebrate with a beer in your names.

That looks awesome! And all that work in less then one year is even more impressive! Congratulations!

Congratulations! My son and I have discovered that taking the body off the frame is a quicker process than putting it back on.

As a certain young pop star would say "SWEET NIBBLETS!!" I have a 5,7 and 10 year old, what can I say!!! Very, very nice work! Projects like this inspire me to get my Jag done! Thanks for the inspiration!!

p.s. Aren't you going to fix those two big dents in the fronts of the inner fender wells??!! <ducks and RUNS!> LOL

What my son didn't say was that after we sat there and admired the car for 30 minutes I forced him to postpone dinner until we had that sucker bolted to the frame. The last thing I wanted to do was to come back the next weekend knowing that I still had to futz with bolting up that body. Turned out not to cost more that a few skinned knuckles and bandaids to get it bolted up, but we managed.

One of the things we were concerned about was getting the ground strap from the engine well-connected to both the frame and the body, so we wire-wheeled a small section from one of the front mounting bolt areas and got a good connection. Hooked a meter up between the valve cover and one of the dash mounting bolts and got a good continuity buzz so I think we are good to go on the ground.

Next up for me is getting the interior finished. Carpet is in and the front kick panels are mounted and now have to put the capping on, tighten up the wheel well covers and put on the rear seat, side, and door panels. Last in will be the dash and seats. I figure once those are in I can take a bit of time to get the convertible frame, top, and lift-the-dot stuff on right.

Of course there's the minor stuff like finishing the engine, bolting on the finders, hood, trunk, and doors as well as strapping on the gas tank, but I figure my son can whip all that out in an hour or so

Craig,
I'll bet the youngster can accomplish those minor tasks in less than an hour.
Looks great and you guys have really been moving on this, now that it looks like a car it makes you want to get er done.
Great job, can't wait to see you driving a resurrected 3.

Howdy Craig,

Hey; The car looks "Outstanding"!

"Congrats" to You and Your Son for doing such a great job in such a short period of time!

Looking forward to more pics as the completion date nears (Real Soon).

Regards,

Russ

Tip of the hat to both of you. Looks great, I'm looking forward to being there soon myself. Same color and interior by the way, nice choice!

Keep the reports and the pictures coming, sure gives me inspiration.

Cheers, Tinkerman
