While reinstalling my newly rear seal conversion motor, I noticed that nmy water pump pulley had some slack.
What needs doing?
The pulley seems to be loose, and slides up and down the shaft ablout 1/4 inch.
If the whole rig needs replacing, what should I buy?
Any upgrades worth the money/
Thanks, Emmett

The pulley slides over a woodruff key on the shaft of the pump, and is held on by a thick washer and a nylock nut. If it's sliding fore-and-aft on the shaft, you need to hold the pulley and tighten the nut -- maybe a new nylock nut is called for. If the pulley is wiggling up and down, you need a new or rebuilt pump, with new bearings.

If it's that loose, I'd replace pulley and pump. The pulley has to be a very snug fit on the shaft, otherwise it will work and fret as it turns; eventually come loose and do unpleasant damage.

Some folks really like the uprated 6-vane pump available from BFE et al. But if you go that way, be sure to ask about special installation procedures. They used to come without the pulley, and you had to be very careful not to put any force on the bearings while installing the pulley.

this one appears to be pressed on the shaft. That is, the end of the shaft is semi-flush with the pulley, and there is no retaining nut.
If this pulley is indeed pressed on, does the pulley or the shaft tend to wear.
It seems that a new pump with pulley is required, although thare is no play in the shaft, and the pump does,t leak.
If I do need a new pump and pulley, is it worthwhile to buy one with multi-vane impellers?
Thanks, Emmett

I've never seen one of the pressed-on pulleys (found only on aftermarket pumps) fail, so I don't know what might be wrong. But it should be solid all the way to the impeller, and just a few thousandths at most in the bearings, so I'd say something is definitely wrong with yours.

IMO if everything else is in good shape and the motor is nearly stock, there is no need for the 6-vane. In fact I bought one back when I was having overheating problems; and then never installed it after I discovered the radiator was bad. But YMMV.

The multi vane water pump is an absolute waste of time and money. It has been routinely touted as the cureall for overheating - don't believe the hype. Their non existent warranty made a nice paper weight for me!!
