The TR is on the road but I can't seem to get the timing right. There is pinging and the engine runs hott. To retarded?
Need to solve this quick for a drive to the car show tomorrow 160 miles round trip.

Too advanced. Back off the timing bit by bit until the pinging stops.

Aloha Dan,

Like Mickey said. Use the knurled nut adjustment on the end of the vaccum advance to retard the timing by turning it clockwise. There should be letters "A" and "R" on the distributor body just forward of the nut, so turning the nut toward the "R" will retard timing. With the engine warmed up to operating temperature, on the road excelerate from 30 to 50 MPH in top gear, if pinging is heard, retard the timing and repeat the road test. Continue this until the pinging disappears. Usually the best inital timing, using the static method is somewhere between 4 and 8 degress BTC.

Thank you Guys . Just came in to get a bite to eat. Seat belts are in and also the roll bar. I will be back out and do the retard thing and let you know what happens,
P.S. Thank you Paul for the headlight rim, it polished up nice.

Dan
You've been busy. Have fun at the show, you deserve it after this summer.
