TR3 temperature gauge

My recently purchased 1960 TR3 was running very hot. It never boiled over but it concerned me that it was running as hot as it was. My solution was to flush everything out, and replace both the rad and the thermostat. It runs much cooler now. My problem is that the temp gauge is not reading accurately. It still shows a much higher temp than what the infrared heat sensor shows. The capillary tube appears to be undamaged. In my mind it should be possible to adjust the position of the needle in the gauge so that it reads the correct temp. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions for me?

While theoretically possible, I doubt you'll be pleased with the result. The gauge movement depends on a curved Bourdon tube that straightens out under pressure. Your tube has been permanently distorted by the overheating, so it isn't going to move by the same amount as the temperature changes. So you could bend the linkage (inside the gauge) to get the reading you want at any one temperature, but the gauge will not be accurate anywhere else.

Pretty much the only practical solutions are to replace the gauge (there are inexpensive aftermarket gauges that will fit without any adapters or there is a seller with better reproductions on ebay); have yours rebuilt (roughly 150 USD last I heard), or ignore the problem.
