TR2/3/3A TR3 steering wheel support

Another appeal to the collective wisdom of the Forum.

While I was putting my steering all back together I noticed in the Bentley manual that there was an option in later cars for a support rod that went from the two little brackets just behind the dash board over to the dash support bracket that goes from the dash to the batter shelf. In short is seems to replace the bolt that clamps the two little brackets to the steering column with this longer thing that is then (with some spacers) attached to the dash support near the centre of the car. Sorry about the poor words trying to describe this thing.

My question is, where can I buy one of those? I don't see it in the big three catalog I have here.

The part you seek is called 602790 by the official Standard Triumph parts book. TRF lists it as "No Longer Stocked." That sounds like the sort of thing you're going to have to scavenge off some parts car. Here, if you're lucky. Ebay? Somewhere else that someone has a carcass to pick over...

I don't have a spare...

Thanks for the reply. From the drawing in the Bentley manual it seems like something I could fabricate. Does anyone have a picture of it installed (or not). I am sure I could put one togehter from a picture, especialy since it is not something you see without trying very hard.

It wouldn't be a terribly difficult part to make. It's a straight rod (5/16", I'm guessing) flattened and drilled for a bolt on one end, threaded on the other.

If you burn out on finding a "real" one, let me know and I'll crawl under my dash to measure the thing up and give you enough info to fab one.

I measured.
It's 5/16" rod
6-3/4" overall length
threaded 5/16 fine on one end, 3-1/4" length of thread
pounded flat on the other and dog-legged slightly, to match the profile of the dashboard stay to which it is bolted -- on top of the stay -- with a 1/4" bolt.

Thanks. That gives me enough of a description for me to make one. Is it attached to the stay near the dash or near the battery shelf?

The threaded end runs through the bracket that clamps onto the steering column and is the screw providing the clamping action. It runs straight over to the dash stay from there -- parallel to the dashboard. Hits it in the middle somewhere.

Adrio,

Here are some pics of mine. Hope that they help.
