I am trying to install a new speedo cable on my TR3 and it seems that the inter-cable is to long. When I fit it in the trans it won't go in the speedo, when I put it in the speedo it won't fit in the trans. What going on?? Please help!!!
Thanks
Greg

Just another defective new part.

Are you sure it's engaging the square drive on both ends?

There have been many reports of inner cables that are a little bit too long. Usually they will seem to connect up okay but the extra length puts pressure on the speedo head causing an erratic needle. sticking needle or even damage.

If that is the problem then shortening the cable or adding a washer can help -- but what you describes sounds much too long if you can't even thread both ends in place.

There have also been at least a few reports of cables supplied where the square portion at the end would not fit inside the drive gear.

What is not entirely clear to me is whether the cables were actually at fault, or if some people have inadvertantly installed the wrong drive gear. The topic frequently comes up when someone has been sold a Volvo OD to fit a Triumph; Volvo uses a different drive gear.

Don't think so, at least it wasn't the case for me on the overdrive TR4 - swapped out a worn original cable that was giving me trouble, the new one was close but was too large. Problem was on the transmission side, not gauge side. I carefully ground down a small amount to get it to fit. Really ticked me off as it caused me to pull the entire transmission tunnel before I sorted out the problem.
