I don't recall ever seeing a set of chrome plated Dzus fastener brackets, of course, that doesn't mean they never came that way. The earlier ones that use the wedge type screens were chrome plated.
Only chromed ones I've seen are in Bill's book and once at a car show. I'd guess that just makes them very rare (like the aluminum windscreen frames). TRF has a catalog entry for them, so Charles thinks they exist as well (rather than just being the product of some overenthusiastic restorer).
But the vast majority are painted. I've seen enough of them painted black that I believe that was also original on some cars (possibly only later ones with black interiors).
I have six of them here and I am in the process of refinishing the best four. All of them are painted. I have removed most of the paint form all of them and none of them had chrome under the paint. The lowest colour I found, that is the colour against the metal, before I hit bare metal was a light dull silvery/gray that resembled gray primer that had binn handled by dirty hands for a while. Above that and before I started sanding they were black. Those where the only two colours I came across.
I had mine plated with nickel and left unpolished. Gives a nice durable finish that doesn't look as flashy as chrome and won't easily scratch like paint.
Prior to that plating mine were just a dull metal color though goodness knows if that was original.
Yep Peter you are dead on with the Phillips head screws. The big three all sell the flat blade interior screws. The judges will ding you for the phillips head screws, seen em do it!
Well one of the Big 3 supply phillips (or at least they did when I did the interior).
Yes, I'm aware that they should be flat blade and someday will get around to replacing them, though I am never in a serious judging situation as I live west of the Rockies. Out here the shiniest car wins.
Thanks so much all, that answers all my questions. The brackets I have are in that slightly shiny primer gray color (or at least once it was), and considering the chromer wants $75 a piece, I'm thinking I'll just stick to paint! I have a perfect grayish/silverish paint I can use.
