TR2/3/3A Tr3 shim pack in steering column

Hi tr3 people I am looking for some input on the shim back that goes on the end of the steering column. I rebuilt one a couple of years ago by the book, and the unit works fine, but it leaks. My machinist buddy said, after words, that I should have used a little silicon (just a delicate amount) on the shims when I tightened the unit down. I still might do that if I ever decide to take on that greasy mess with silicone, however, this is different vehicle a 61 tr3 and I am looking for some additional advice.

Not exactly sure what is meant by silicon but I would think something like Hylomar would be appropriate. I have heard of some owners using grease in the steering box but I have always just used the usual gear oil. I think the grease trick may have come from Land Rovers where immersion in H2O may occur.

Hi Geo the Hylomar looks like something that would work quite well. I think I will try it.
