After fighting it a bit of gratification!
 
I've got an old top cover that someone broke off trying to remove the shifter. So it could have been uglier still.
 
I know this is an old thread, but for future visitors here's what worked for me. I removed the cover from the gearbox and the bolts holding the cap in place. I heated the cap all around the edge to a cherry red then positioned it upside down on the workbench and pounded on the edge of the bolt holes with a nail set. After a few pounds going around the cap to each of the three holes it started to move! The holes in the cap were a little mangled, but nothing that would affect its function -- and could easily be repaired with a spot of MIG welding and drilling/filing.

Glad it worked! I think red hot for steel is above the melting point of aluminum...I'd only apply that much heat for a very short time.
 
Agree. I used Mcoomey's method and penetrating oil but without the heat. Took quite some time as I recall. Perhaps mine was not as badly stuck though.
