TR2/3/3A TR3: Replace Outrigger?

Wow, I sat here and thought for a while...I wouldn't think so.

The usual fix would be to run a smaller OD steel pipe down the center of the old outrigger and weld it all up. The problem is, the sill will hamper you from shoving the reinforcement pipe from the outside. From the inside, there are multiple obstacles. The fuel line, drive train, and the fact the outrigger is but-welded to the frame...so you would have to cut a hole through the frame.

Option 2 is to just cut the outermost part off and replace it. That would be do-able. The disadvantage there is trying to line the assembly up to weld, and then the weld will be a simple but-weld. Not a prefferable weld for a high stress part like this.

The best option would be to remove the body bolts on the side that needs replacing and loosen the other side. Then you can tilt the body just 4-5" to gain access to the outrigger. Of course there will be some other things to remove...steering, bumpers, etc.

Just thought of an option 3 that may work:

Cut the outermost part off even with the outer frame. Use a small length of reinforcement tube...say just 2 or three inches... to shove into the new outrigger. When you place the newer outrigger up in place, use a welding rod through the outside hole to shove the reinforcement tube half way past the cut. This would line up the outrigger axially, which can then be bolted to the body. You will have to support the body weight to keep the outrigger from sagging before you finally weld up around the splice.

OK, I changed my mind...I think you can do it!!
