TR2/3/3A TR3 Rear Fender Bolts

Getting ready to test fit my rear fenders. I only have 2 of the caged nuts left on, one on each fender. I was thinking about cutting them off and just using regular stainless nuts and bolts on the five that go out from the trunk to the fender I think that I can reach up inside the fender to put the nuts on.[I hate those caged nuts]. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Also are those 10 bolts something special? Maybe with small heads so they don't interfere with the trunk lid?
Thanks
Greg

Yes, the bolts from the drip rail into the fender are 'specials'. Regular bolts will at least tear up the paint on the trunk lid, and may keep it from closing all the way. The factory even left out the flat washers shown in the parts catalog.

Proper bolts (which have a shallow domed head and a screwdriver slot) are available from the usual suspects, got mine @ TRF.

As far as using regular nuts instead of caged; I would recommend against it. No doubt it can be done, if you have enough help, but mounting a fender by yourself is challenging enough without also having to hold a nut.

Original type nuts & cages are available @ TRF; or MMC sells nuts that are already in a cage (which can be mounted with pop rivets if you don't want to weld them).

Hi Greg,

I seem the recall that the 5 on each side that go through the trunk are a slotted (screwdriven) dome type set screw.

I am sure that some others will jump in here.

I see that Randall beat me to it :cooler:

Regarding the cage nuts, I know that Macy's Garage also sells two sizes in SS.

Cheers,
