Thanks Charley. That’s what I did when I replaced the rear axle seals a year ago during my rebuild. I shimmed to 0.005 on the left and 0.004 on the right when the axle was out of the car (much easier to do at that time! )
I finally got the car in the road and while taking it for a 15 minute shakedown drive, I noticed a clunking sound from the rear when I turn. I got home, jacked it up, and noticed considerable end play on the rear wheels. I removed the wheels and measured 0.014 on each side. That’s when the fun began. I figured removing it .008 on each side would bring it in but instead I measured .001 on one side and .002 on another. That started a nasty cycle of removing and reinstalling shims on both sides multiple times that made me second guess whether I was shimming correctly.
I’m going to reshim to my original calculations and drive it and recheck. I’m thinking that maybe the bearings need to settle in after adjusting shims.
That raises the question: What happens if the end play is below 0.004?
