I'm looking for an early style oil cap for my 56 TR3. All the vendors sell is the later cap with the three dimples. The one I need is the press on with flat top and no dimples. I got a run of parts to be painted black and would like to have one on hand . I know they come up on ebay from time to time. Let me know if you have one for sale. Thanks

Keith-

I likely do, but will need to get back to the house first to confirm. So others may come to your aid faster! As I recall it was a flat top but with a slight bevel on the edge.

Randy

Randy that would be the cap I need. I'll let you know if I find one or not.

bnw the change was made around TS18230E or April 1957.

My TR3A which I bought brand new came with the oil filler cap which has no dimples. It is TS 27489 LO built on Feb, 14, 1958. I lose points at TRA because it's nat according to their judging standards book. But the oil filler caps like mine were sent to all TR3s and TR3As sold in Canada (at least up to some point) plus all the TR3As sent to Australia - eather as complete or in kit form to be assembled there.

Now you go figure.

Here is a photo of my original cap.

FWIW, I have had several caps that look just like Don's (except for the decal and black paint). I can't prove they were original, but it seems unlikely that two different former owners would both select the same aftermarket cap and nothing else to "pretty up" the engine compartment.

Don the cap you have is the one I'm looking for , but I have had the good fortune of finding one for myself. The date and engine number from my last post is for USA bound cars, they were the first to get the cap with the dimples. You should have TRA check out Bill Piggott's book Original Triumph TR2/3/3A page 118 TS18230. TRA should have an exemption for non USA cars since the change over is vague.

It was back in 1992 that I gave up trying to convince TRA to accept "unusual" items such as my oil filler cap. At TRA that year, a Canadian won the best of show because (in addition to having a beautiful TR3A) he had bought a 3-dimpled USA oil filler cap that he uses only when he is going to TRA so he won't lose a point.

That was the year that TRA told me that I lost a point because the plunger button for the windscreen washer was in the wrong place. Mine was a dealer-added option, installed by the S-T dealer I bought my car from in May 1958 (brand new) but TRA wouldn't give in to my points.

The dealer could have installed this optional extra item anywhere and it would (or should) be considered "original". He installed it next to the overdrive switch.
