TR2/3/3A TR3...Moving the Coil & Petronix Wires

I'm going to move the coil away from the motor because of potential vibration and heat issues I hear about. Anyone done this and possibly have a pic? Also I'm going to need to extend the Petronix wires and wonder what guage wire I should use and the best way to splice the wires together...shrink tubing? Karl
 
I have not done it but it would be a good Idea, I would say use the same size wire not sure of the gauge, Use a crimp connector and heat shrink tubing on top
 
Karl - If you are trying to resolve a specific problem, I assume you have tried a new/known good coil in place of what you have? If not, this is so simple I would certainly try that first. Worst case is you end up with a spare coil which is a pretty good thing to have in the boot.

I know some have experienced coil problems that they associate with heat but I have not unless heat accelerated the failure of a coil. Lucas Sport coils may be more susceptible to the latter.

Karl, almost all cars used to have the coil mounted to the motor; most of them still do. The coils are designed to take the heat & vibration. Plus having the coil mounted to the body will force the high tension lead to flex constantly, and it's less able to take it (especially with modern carbon-core wires).

Relocate if you want, but that Pertronix is much more sensitive to heat & vibration than a quality coil is, IMO.

Personally, I don't trust crimp connectors around cars. Just too many problems later on. I won't accept anything less than a soldered joint.

Heat shrink will be fine for insulation and weather protection, though.
