TR3 up-date

Another project update. My parents decided to visit this weekend and I put my Dad to work. We got the body tub on the rotisserie and test fit it on the reconditioned TR4 frame. we were some what amazed when almost every bolt hole lined up the first time. We did find that the TR3 mounting holes on the front inner wings that bolt to the diagonal brace behind the spring tower did not line up. When I thought about it, this makes sense because the spring towers are about 2" further apart on the 4 vs. the 3. So I will need to fabricate 2 more little brackets. We also test fit one rear wing and one front. It actually looks like I could run without any modifications to the wings, though the tires will be outside the wings by about 1" up front and 2" in back. I'll test it again once I get the engine and tranny mounted and closer to a real ride height.

The rotisserie worked well. I am able to spin the body tub over very easily with one hand. It will make the final welding of the floors a breeze. On the first flip I did notice that the inner sills I got from Moss need some more modifications. Basically the body mounting points are low compared to the bottom of the floors. I'll have to remove them (again) and bring them closer to the floors.

Enjoy the pics...

Re: TR3 up-date

Lookin good, Greg. My buddy up the road used a rotisserie for his TR4 (and a friend's 240Z) restoration. Makes it real pleasurable.

Because you are using the TR4 frame (I think), this makes the track wider, and the wheels stick out somewhat. I have seen this done before and it looks good, and, I have seen one where the builder did some very discreet custom fender flares. Looked really, really good. I just remember them looking like they belonged on that car. Wish I remember where I saw the pics.

And, I would be willing to bet that there has been a brisket or two on that barbecue pit in the front of your garage.

Re: TR3 up-date

Thanks. That was a fun welding project.

Let me know if you find pictures of the flares. I still have not made my mind up on what I want to do with the wings.

My friend has a real smoker for the briskets plus we only live 20 minutes from the Salt Lick, the best Brisket in Texas.

Re: TR3 up-date

I saw a picture also of a Ford V-8 powered TR3 that had flared fenders and it looked as good as any Cobra. I see if I can find it, as it was a really great conversion.

Re: TR3 up-date

I've seen that one too, Paul. Looks good, although his interior was a little bling. Those flares are good, but the one I remember showed the flares to be a bit larger and yet more subtle, if that makes sense. Looked like a TR3 on steroids. Kinds like the fiberglass racing wings that are sold for the TR6, or like the fenders on the Shelby, still subtle though. I just never liked tires sticking out of a fender too far. I think the guy that I remembered seeing also had his flares leaded in.

Boy, I do great with someone else's car.

Re: TR3 up-date

Wow that tub looks like it is real nice shape with original paint; I am totally envious. Perhaps next week, I will post some picture of my project 1961 tr3 that I am blasting in my home made sand pit without the rotisserie. The more I look at the rotisserie; I want one. How are you going to strip the body? Electrolysis would be my first choice, but personally I cannot afford it. I had my frame blasted commercially, and I am doing the panels with a small home unit.

Re: TR3 up-date

I will blast it in the driveway. I could not see spending $1000 to have some one blast it. That is why I built the rotisserie. I will also paint it in the driveway.

Those pictures lie a bit. That was a repaint from about 15 years ago when I paid someone $1000 to paint it. Total ripoff on the paint job, it started chipping and rusting through within a year. You get what you pay for. I decided this time around to do every thing myself, that way I know who to blame
