tr3 kick panel/carpet

On a tr3 is the kick panel/carpet where the dimmer switch is (driver side) glued right to the sheet metal and follow the curving contour, or is the carpet glued to a piece of ÂĽ something and remains flat on a vertical plan. I ask this because I do not seem to have enough foot room for a comfortable long drive. In addition, when I look in some of the books it looks like the carpet is glued right to the body tube with a little rubber pad by the dimmer switch. If that is case there would a lot more room for my right foot. Any comments are appreciated.

There are no empty spaces between the carpet and the body, if that's what you're asking. even if the panals are on a backer board, they are contoured agenst the body. The only thing I could offer is to relocate the dimmer switch. Maybe make it hand operated or somthing. that would give you some extra room.

Are you sure Banjo? So what you are saying is that the carpet is clued to the sheet metal and follows the contour of the body disappearing up under the dash. I guess the fur flex would be glued and/or pinch between the two. Perhaps somebody can load up a photo I would truly appreciate it.

On my TR3 the kick panels were glued to the sheet metal on both sides.

Not sure I understand the question but on mine the kick panel covering follows the sheet metal, thus it fits into that depression where the dipper switch is mounted... indeed the 2 bold securing the dipper switch press the carpet (vinyl in that area) into the depression.

Foot room and long drive comfort may be improve by a pair of driving shoes. I use a pair of wrestling shoes which have thin soles that are as narrow as the rest of the shoe. Very nice for driving (haven't tried them for wrestling). They make my feet small enough that I can slip my left foot under the clutch pedal. With the seat all the way back against the rear seat that is not too bad a position for long trips.

Thanks Geo that is good advice. In other words, there is no solid back pad behind the carpet. I have never thought of putting my feet in behind the clutch peddle and clearly some driving shoes would help. I must be getting more mature because I am trying to put a little more comfort in the tr. I never even use to think of such ridiculous things. My rational before was that a tr3 was a low draft with a heater in it.

I am glad you responded Don because you can just go outside and look, but tell me what holds the carpet to the cavity in the recess. I can imagine the screws and the dimmer bracket and I am sure they take up most of the fastening, but what about the distance between the two.
