Can anyone tell me about the hood straps on this TR3 I am looking at buying? I have never seen these before and fear it is some owner add-on.....which is pretty tough to remove.

Thanks!

Its definitely an add on - car looks in good shape though!

Agreed that they're add-ons, but judging from the fit of the passenger door, the straps might not be the worst part of the body? (In fairness, it could just be the angle and/or lighting in the picture that makes me wonder about the door and sill area.)

I am a little worried on the fit of the doors in both sides actually. If ya'll promise not buy the thing, I would welcome your thoughts on this car:

TR3 for sale

Thanks

For starters, I see:

* seat upholstery wrong
* front badge should be blue-white
* letters and badge too high on apron; compare with eBay item 300314266149
* breather tube to nowhere on aftermarket valve cover
* door and panel alignment iffy at best
* Filler in sills: Can't see seam between outer sill and rear "dogleg" panel
* bullet "wing" mirrors look wrong, are wrong and must be pretty much useless
* wrong gas filler cap

Didn't look that bad on the first drivers side picture you posted. Based on the passenger view, I think you might be able to make the assumption that the sill or sills were replaced. The door has a slight bow, but the replacement sills are flat so you get that mismatch - also the full side view on the passenger side is shows pretty large gaps on that side.

Not my place to say yes or no on this car, but I would argue that at this price range I believe an overdrive TR3A would be attainable. This one, for example looks pretty interesting, although I have no idea what reserve is on it: 59 3A with spats

Randy

sheesh, Andy's a quick typer, he picked the same ebay car my link points to. I think it is because he lost the donut bet!

What's going on with the heater hoses?

After looking at the Ebay listing, and NADA, I would say that this '60 TR3A is not in the median price range.

They seller says this one has all the options... which is wrong, unless it does have the OD from the Italia, which was definitely an option in 1960, as was the factory hardtop.

"This is an older restoration... $ 21,125" - Seller

"Average Retail Value = $19,200
This vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. A "20-footer"." - NADA

A quote I recall from a chick film (Steel Magnolias):

"The only thing that separates us from the lower animals is our ability to accessorize."

Sometimes people just don't know when to stop.

My apologies to anyone who really likes hood straps.

I recall a discussion a while back about replacing the sills on a TR3 and it was mentioned that the replacement sills that you get now are straight and the correct sills should have a very slight curve in them to match the doors. My guess is the reason the sills look off is that the sills on this car were replaced and this is what a car looks like with the sills that don't have that slight curve in them.

I am with George...

If you own an Allard or a Morgan then of course your car needs to have straps.

But, with a TR3 you need to rethink how much you add.

The doors probably need straps not the hood.

Cheers,

Steve

Wow....great insight guys. Based on what you'll pointed out I am most likely going to pass despite us agreeing on a lower price than what is advertised.

At these prices I don't mind some drive train / interior work, but I really want the body sorted out and correct.

What a valuable resource this group is.....I appreciate your guidance.

Randy

The only orignal TRs with straps would be these works cars..
Triumph%20TR2%20original.jpg
and the TR3S works cars (in distance)

To add on from Andy:
Passenger side rear arch looks iffy
Water hoses
Water temp gauge capillary run
Rear seat iffy
Non-original starter/clutch buttons
Modern GM-type seatbelts
What's on the left of the dashboard?

Pretty car, though!

Other than that it nearly concourse

If it wasn't for the body panel fit & filler I might be inclined to go for it....love those wire wheels. Red car with chromed wires...it could catch the swine flu and some one will still buy it
