TR2/3/3A TR3 Gearbox overhaul

Has anyone experienced, during a TR3 gearbox rebuild, where the two largest gears have taken on a brass-like color to the top of the gear teeth? The teeth all appear to be in good condition with no chips or missing pieces. I am wondering if this is normal wear or if the gearbox at one time possibly heated up.

I've seen that a lot. Frequently brand new gears come with a copper tint, so I assume it is some kind of treatment or plating they use at the factory. So, if all else looks alright you're good to go.

Yeh I have often wonder what that brass color is. I have also seen on rockers, worm gears, and other hardened iron objects that seem to be in close proximity to brass. If I still worked at the university, I would ask one of the chemistry people. Perhaps there are some hard science guys on the forum.
