TR2/3/3A TR3 gearbox fluid levelsI

Took my 59 TR3 out for my first test drive and noticed some gear lube coming out of a vent hole on the top section of the shifting tower. Not knowing what the previous owner had done with the gearbox I decided to change fluids . I first pulled the fill hole plug on the side of the case and gear lube just came flowing out. I thought to myself that the P O had way over filled the gearbox. I finished dumping the old gear oil out the bottom hole.
I purchased a quart of Lucas 80 Wt gear oil and put the required 1 1/2 pints in the case. My concern is this 1 1/2 pints of new oil was way below the fill hole on the side of the case. My thinking is that it should have reached that level. How do I tell if my gear box is low on fluid. My transmission does not have A dip stick. Should I add more fluid up to the fill hole of keep with the 1 1/2 pints that my manual states?
Thanks

Fill to the bottom of the hole in the side. You have to watch the Triumph documentation, as units aren't always what they seem. For example, that is 1.5 Imperial pints, which is about 1.8 US pints.

The dipstick was discontinued in early 59; you appear to have at least a gearbox made after April or so (TS50001).

Of course that is if you do not have an overdrive on the gearbox - an OD unit will have higher oil capacity.

In any case, yeah, fill until it starts to run out.

One does have to wonder how the PO managed to significantly overfill your gearbox since it does not have the top fill/dip stick. I suppose if someone had the cover off that would have been one way.

Having the car tilted, eg jack stands under only one end (or one side) high enough to allow access to the fill plug, is another way.
