TR2/3/3A TR3 Gear Shift Anti Rattle Spring ##%&*rikerfrats

Just got a new spring and plunger from Moss. Took the gear shifter out to see how well the plunger and spring would fit. Very difficult to compress the two into the hole. Put the assembly in a vice and only succeeded in compressing the plunger in about 1/3 of the way so there still is way too much sticking out to cram into the trans socket hole as it would not compess any more! Am I missing something here? By using just the 5/8X 7/8 rubber mod talked about earlier and lots of grease would I be able to get rid of the annoying rattle without the spring and plunger? I hate having to drive with one hand constantly on the shifter. Surely others have resolved this problem. Karl

Karl,

Is it possible there's still an old spring in there?

Or even a piece of one? I saw that last year while helping a friend re-assemble her gearshift with a Moss kit. I also had a TR guru say the Moss kit spring is too long (altho I've never seen that) Once you get it sorted out, go with the mod as well (suspenders and a belt!)

If you cannot compress it in a vice then I'd suggest looking for a broken spring or debris in the shifter. Don't cut the new spring as you will create a rattle by lessening the spring tension.
On the TR3 one can install the lever with the transmission tunnel out of the car. On the TR4 one has to install the tunnel first which makes installing the shifter/spring/plunger difficult. I've found that if one installs the spring and plunger and holds them in place with a plastic tie wrap one can then install the lever and the plunger will engage as the tie warp is forced off.

:iagree: with all of the above. The factory spring is actually short enough that a blob of grease will hold the plunger partially in the hole.

No spring or debris in the hole. I should have read Bobs post earlier about the twist tie. I ended up cutting the spring in half and that helped with the install and now I'm getting much less rattle but not completely gone. I might try a 2/3 length spring next time.

They did have blobs of grease, though.

Blobs of Grease, I think that was the band that played at my high school prom...
