TR2/3/3A TR3 Fuel Pump...Rebuild or New

I'm in the process of redoing alot of the smaller parts for the TR3 resto. I've recently finished the wiper motor and the carbs. On to the fuel pump. I took it apart, simple enough, and now I have a decision to make. Moss shows a rebuild kit for $19, but it does not contain the diaphragm shaft shaft seal. TRF has a kit for $25 that has the seal. I looked in my copy of the original TR2-TR3 parts book I have, it it doesn't show the shaft seal, so apparently it was added later. Then again, Moss offers a NEW repro pump with the priming lever for $40.

So here are my questions...is the Moss repro pump any good?? Does anyone have any experience with it?? And, how neccessary is the shaft seal, being that the earlier pumps did not have them?? The one in my original is toast.

I rebuilt the fuel pump on my TR3B. Though it is a TR4 engine, the fuel pump is the same. A Moss rebuild kit seems to have been in the boxes of parts which came with the car. I found that part box and a TRF parts envelope in it for a seal. The part # for the seal is 508981. An old TRF catalogue says TRF supplies the seal with their rebuild kit. That same catalogue listed an original style rebuilt fuel pump as available. Since I rebuilt mine and anstalled the seal it seems to work fine. I do remember that the rear bolt is almost impossible to get a wrench on and turn. As I recall, I used a cut off wrench and a claw, or is it crow, fitted wrench to get on the bolt and could still only turn it about a flat at a time. You may want to call TRF to see what is available. They were always heplful for me.

Thanks guys, that's just the info I was looking for. I'll stay away from the new pump and re-do the original with the TRF kit.

I bought a TRF kit recently to re-build an original pump as my spare and the seal for the diaphram shaft was not the correct size. I put in the old one that had been in the pump. Keep all the old parts till you finish the re-build and test it. I have not tested mine yet.

None of my fuel pumps have the seal and none seems the worse for it. It may be that the seal is not in the manual because it was deleted (rather than added).

The problems I have had with repro pumps have been the pin that holds the lever falling out and one of the check valves falling out. I now use only rebuilt original pumps.

Aloha All,

I believe Geo is correct, the seal was deleted. If installed, it would prevent some engine oil getting up into the pump under the pump diaphragm which is oil resistant. The oil is free to drain back into the engine. Rebuilding the fuel pump without the seal IMO does not seem to be a concern.

Like Geo, I to have had two reproduction pumps fail on the road because in both cases the pivot pin through the pump body has fallen out. Rebuilding the pump is straight forward and easy to accomplish. As long as the threads for the inlet and outlet are in good condition and the sediment bowl cover is not warped to prevent a good seal I would always rebuild the pump.
