TR2/3/3A tr3 exhaust manifold

Well I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket on my tr3 with a metal inlay composite (stock type). The one I had on there was the one that Moss use to advertize as a life time gasket (third oldest lie in the world). I still cannot figure out what the gasket was made of some kind of synthetic stuff with no metal inlay. Anyways what a mess, the gasket basically dissolved in some areas and turned goooie in others and stuck like concrete in others. I was able to leave the exhaust on the header pipe and the carbs on the manifold. The job took about 10 hours and come out nice. The car actually runs better and I told that to a gear head guy. He maintained that an exhaust leak if really thought out is a vacuum leak? Could someone explain that one to me better?
