Here's is what's left of the marks on my TR4... I think the TR3s' marks would have been similar.
In case you can't quite tell, the characters are arranged thusly:
.<span style="font-size: 23pt">T R</span>
.<span style="font-size: 23pt"> 4</span>
Not so much yellow as perhaps red-orange. Maybe a brush was used but almost looks like someone dipped their finger in a paint-pot and wrote on the block.

Yeah - the one I had was red, also. I left it in place, rather than removing and/or painting over it.
