TR2/3/3A TR3 Driveshaft

When I took the driveshaft off of my TR3A, the smaller end of the telescoping shaft was int the rear. I have seen pictures that show the smaller end in the front, and also the moss catalog seem to suggest that the small end is in the front. Does anyone know the correct orientation, or does it make any difference?

Thanks,
Jim

Factory workshop manual specifically mentions splines at the gearbox end, so I've always put it that way. Don't know why, or how much difference it would make, but I figure there must be a reason or they wouldn't mention it. Maybe it just helps keep road dirt away from the splines?

Can you still get to the Zerk on the splines if it is mounted backwards? I didn't bother to look or visualize, just occurred to me that might be a reason.

Yes, you can still get to the grease fitting if the splines are in the back, but I went ahead and turned the driveshaft around so the splines are in the front.

Actually, Geo, The grease fittings are much easier to get to if the splines are mounted to the rear. if the splines are mounted to the front, the grease fittings on the U-Joint and on the splined joint are obstructed by the cruciform which makes them very difficult, if not impossible to get to from underneath the car. They are accessible, however, from above if the transmission tunnel is removed. Mounting the splines to the rear seems to make more sense, but, as Randall pointed out, the workshop manual states that the splined end should always be at the gearbox end. It would be interesting to know if anyone has ever had problems by mounting the splines to the rear.
