I can't seem to get the search function to work, but was pretty sure I'd read about using the wrinkle paint and heating it in an over to have it wrinkle properly. Anyway, I did that this weekend, using Eastwood Wrinkle paint, and the results are way cool. I need to do the dash mirror while the can is still good but it's really cool to see it happen and looks very much like the original.

I had to sand blast off the old chipped up stuff -not to mention the rust on the back side.

Instead of using an oven, I used a hair dryer. It was the third time I tried; baking under a floodlight will not work. The hair dryer worked out great..
 
One note - I went the hair dryer route and it turned out great. Only one caution - that wrinkle paint can typically tells you to apply three medium heavy wet coats about 5-10 minutes apart. That means that the final covering is fairly thick. It wrinkled up just fine after about 30-60 minutes with a hair dryer on the final coat, and I let it dry 24 hours (70 degree F dry basement) after that. Even then the paint was still soft enough to dent with a fingernail, so that when I went to mount switches it took off some of the paint (or at least moved it). I suspect the reason is that the solvents on those lower layers takes quite a while to evaporate completely. My suggestion would be to let the finish dry completely firm before trying to mount gauges and switches, and to test it with a fingernail first.
 
Haven't done the dash yet but did the heater parts, also using the Eastwood paint, came out great. Got to follow the instructions to the letter though. What you did looks really fine Jer!

Did the dash & VC of the MGB with the PlastiKote variety. To get it to wrinkle it was set out in the July Florida sun. You could almost HEAR it goin' off. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

And the wrinkle pattern/texture came out as a VERY good match to factory original. The Eastwood paint seemed too "coarse" to me. The PlastiKote is a "tighter/finer" krinkle somehow.
