TR2/3/3A TR3 Carpets- TRF vs. Moss? + TR move from NM to NY

Hey Guys,

first, the good news- I'm bringing my TR3 out to Brooklyn.. After winning the NYTimes contest, I had many folks contact me . Some just wanted to relate their own Triumph stories to me and others actually offered up garage situations for it here in New York. Really cool, kind of restored my faith in humanity a bit, especially since there wasn't any contact info for me in the article- these folks had to do a little research to find me. I've located a garage in Queens where the 3 will be parked alongside a Jensen and many old Mercedes. Definitely nice stalemates.

So I have scheduled a transport service (many thanks to those on the list that helped choose one), and now I'm just waiting for a pickup & drop off schedule. I CANNOT wait. I was just out in NM a week ago and got to drive it. I'm also bringing out the judson supercharger I have for it. Not sure when that will go on, but it'll be a fun project.

Second, I need to get a new carpet set. Moss is having a phenomenal sale on carpets right now, but I've heard the TRF has nicer stuff. I'm not talking wool, just the loop rayon set. Anyone have an opinion on the merits of either?

Cheers,
Gavin

Hey, Gavin -

I can only speak to the TRF (Magic Carpet) set. Very nice quality and fit. Good sales and installation support as well.

I bought mine from TRF also and can reiterate what Mickey says about the quality. When I ordered that carpet set, it was part of the whole interior that I got at one time. Since I'm going red, I wanted everthing to pretty much match, and I figured that ordering from the same place at the same time might be best. I wasn't disappointed. Of course, true to TRF's style, it took about a month to receive. :yesnod:

I would ask Moss if this sale item is a final sale. If not, you can always send it back if you don't like it. They're real good about returns, at least in my experience.

Only one problem with the original-style loop rayon carpeting from TRF -- at least the charcoal grey color appropriate for very late TR3As: apparently it can fade to an orangey-yellow color over time, just like the original carpeting did. Now THAT'S authenticity!

Seriously, though, their carpets are beautifully done!

I read about the fading issue in the TRF catalog....I'm not sure if I'm okay with that, especially as I'd like to have the top down a lot.

A little too authentic for me! :nonod:

Gavin,
Congrats on getting your car delivered!

I did not look at the TRF carpets but I did just install a Moss kit in my car and it went in very nicely and looks great.

Here are some pictures of how it turned out:

Hey, I also did the tires and wheels we talked about.

Gavin: TRF did my red nylon loop for the 3A. It's not installed yet, but it is beautiful. I like the fact that it is cut and assembled in-house. As far as the fading problem is concerned, there may be a treatment that could be applied. I intend to "scotch guard" mine before installing. I think you would need something that would block UV. Worth a google perhaps.

Curt-

That looks awesome! love the wheels of course, and the interior looks amazing. Definitely jealous. Great job.

I'm thinking charcoal gray carpet, and some new corbeaus: in gray if it matchs the gray panels i have already:

take care.

that's a great idea- thanks!

Let me see a picture when you get the corbeaus installed!

Since you're thinking about grey -- let me strongly reiterate what Andy has said -- my TRF grey carpet has turned orange. Happened pretty quickly (a year or so) and has gotten worse year-by-year.

Appears to be a reaction to sunlight.

TRF tries to fob this off by claiming the originals did this too -- that is nonsense. My car had the original carpet and I even saved some as an example. Yes, after 40 years it didn't look so great but it had never turned orange.

They have a problem with their grey carpet, they know it, and as far as I know are doing nothing about it.

OTOH, I have black carpet from TRF in the '3 that still looks good after 26 years.

Sure throw a wrinkle into my plans. Had thoughts for grey in my*8

Discoloration in a year?? That's pretty shocking. Anyone have any idea if the Moss grey has a similar problem?

Maybe I should go wool, or just stick with black.

I'd go with the Classics over the Clubman in a TR.

I have the TRF black Wilton wool. Much nicer than the nylon that I had bought from them before.

I should mention that was living and driving in Arizona sun, but the same outcome eventually appears in less sunny climes based on what I've neard from others.

It's an aesthetic choice, isn't it. I already have 2 Clubmans and love them. They have in fact saved my life once. I use 4 point seatbelts and those would be harder to use with the Classic as well.
