TR2/3/3A TR3 Brake Dust Shield

Are the dust shields necessary on the TR3A. I'm putting on Toyota caliupers and am considering leaving them off. The VTR article says they can be left off...

My TR3A (TS 27489 LO) came without any dust covers from the factory new in May 1958. They started to put them on later. I never missed them. The TR3A we restored (TS 81551 L) had them so we put them back on. So out of 80,000 sidescreen TRs, about 30,000 didn't have them and about 50,000 had them.

My TR3 also never had them...just as well, because I put the Toyota calipers on also and was glad I didn't have to worry about messing with them.
