TR2/3/3A TR3 Bonnet Dzus Fasteners

I'm getting ready to install the bonnet on the TR3. Last piece to go on...Anyway, I have a question regarding the Dzus hold-downs. Is there any sort of fiber gasket between the fastener and the bonnet on the top side?

Art,
None on mine and the Moss exploded diagram doesn't show anything, the paint under mine is still in good shape.

Thanks, I was leaning that way, as I couldn't see anything either. It just seemed like something should be there. I'm using the old dzus' with the old locking washers that I do think would survive another removal if neccessary.

Art --
I couldn't make my old washers work anymore, so I went to the local hardware store and bought two E-clips that fit the groove in the Dzus fastener. Easy! Works great! Will survive multiple R&Rs, as required.

Aloha Art,

There is an aluminum grommet goes through the hole in bonnet. You slide it through and them hammer it into shape. It creates a raise lip slightly above the bonnet sheet metal for the Dzus fastner turn on and protect the paint.

I like Moseso's suggestion about the e-clip. Althogh I have reused the locking washers again and again by hammering them flat and reinstalling.

I never took out the old aluminum grommets from the bonnet. I got the fasteners in with the old washers, but it's not really holding the dzus fasteners in so great. I'm going to go to the harware store today and get some e-clips to fit. Much better idea.

Thanks

For anyone replacing the aluminum grommet, TRF sells a simple flaring tool that will flare and flatten the grommet in the bonnet. I then installed the Dzus fastener from the topside and on the bottom side installed the cupped retaining washer. Instead of crimping it with a hammer though, I placed a 1/2" socket over the washer, and compressed it with a big C-clamp (be sure to protect the topside- I used a small block of wood). The washer will compress nicely and work itself into the groove of the fastener. However, I sure like the sound of the e clip for ease of removal, if necessary.

When I did this job, I coated everything in Waxoyl in case the paint got damaged in the process.

Hi Art I went with the Ease/thingy on mine also. In addition, I put a small piece of leather or double-back vinyl under the body of the Dzus to protect the paint so that when I turned the Dzus, it would not rub the paint off.

Earl's surplus used to carry any and everything to do with dzus fasteners. Might wanna do a search engine check for them.. I know they used to have a web catalog, but I haven't used them for over a decade.
