Was there any type of emblem that was attached to the front of the TR3 (61) ashtray mounted underneath the dash?

Mine does not have the plastic or metal piece on the front. I guess that is what I meant. I just have the metal ash tray.

Any thoughts about when these started being fitted as standard? I've not seen any signs of an ashtray on any of my TRs, but they've all been earlier cars.

Someone made as short run a few years ago but I don't know the details. With a good original, you could make a mold and diy. All I have is the dash bracket for mounting.

<span style="font-size: 10pt">From the first TR-2's you could always order an ashtray as an optional accessory and the style changed from time to time and at the whim of Triumph. Generally their style was "swing out" for use, and away when not needed. They were black plastic, with a black painted mounting clamp and chromed detachable insert. They are very rare. See photos below.

This optional swing-away ashtray was replaced with a "pull-out" type ashtray which became standard for all sidescreen cars shipped to North America, including Canada, at about TS42400. This became the "standard" ashtray. As shown in my previous email, it slid outward on a bracket fastened to the passenger's side dash support stay. Because of its location, the front often got knocked off and lost.
