TR2/3/3A Tr3 air cleaners

Hi tr3 people this might be a stupid question, but here goes. Do the after market air cleaners change the amount of air intake into the carbs? Is there any difference in performance between the original and stock?

Regards George

I would think the after market cleaners would do a better job of filtering but can't imagine they are less restrictive than those old wire mesh ACs. 'Ram pipes' or 'air horns' OTOH may provide a more direct air flow but the gain may be very small.

Some use a foam ring that goes on over the stock ACs to give some additional filtering.

Do you know of a source for such a ring Geo?

You're not really going to see performance gains with air filters on a TR3 like you would altering a stock airbox configuration on a newer vehicle designed to be quiet and restrict flow for longevity.

Also, I wouldn't really be too worried about longevity on a TR3. The engines can last 100K+ miles with the stock air filters, and let's face it -- most owners won't put one-fifth those miles in the time they own a TR3 these days. Heck, I think I have only 500 or 600 miles on mine in two years.

I don't but I will ask the local club member who uses them. He's a pretty crafty guy so it is likely he makes his own. Pretty simple really, just a ring of foam about 2" wide and slightly smaller diameter than the AC metal filter. He streches it over the AC, then removes them for 'show'.
