tr3 58 or 61 front fenders

Hi all I am working on the body tub of 1961 tr3 and I am using some front fenders off a 1958. The problem I have is that the fenders seem to hang up right at the front cowling, and it looks like the bolt hole (the one that goes in from the inside) is not going to workout. One thing I did notice is that the channel trough that drains at the rear of the 58 fender has a turned up end (maybe and 3/16) and looks like it is hitting on the underside of the cowling as it rolls in. I am not sure if that lip should be there. My biggest problem is that it affects the door swing. I have some other 58 fenders from a slightly newer 58 that do not have the lip, but they very rough. I am asking these questions because I hoping to learn from someone else’s mistakes. I not sure whether to grind off some of the cowling or some of the fender. The irony of this whole deal is that years ago I used the 61 fenders on a 58 without this problem, thinking I would never restore the 61. Anyways any ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome to the world of semi-hand built cars.

You will have to massage (grind, beat, weld, bend) to fit.

If rough fender's fit better, go with them. As YankeeTR said You WILL have to massage to fit, and the less massage the better. I've had two restorations and fitting fender, doors, trunk or hood all have they fitting issues. The best of luck.

Re: tr3 58 or 61 front fenders

Thanks guys for your accurate response, and I did find some of the problem, one of the outriggers has a slight twist in it. I will probably have to leave it, but I was kinda thinking that I could perhaps twist it back if the floor pan was undone at the out rigger. It looks to me like the floor pan is what mostly holds the outrigger vertical. However, the bend/twist will probably hold itself in the twist and the whole thing will move. My problem at this point is the lower bolts in the door jam for the fender do not line up. I could slot the lower fender bolt holes and live it, I guess, but the door reveal/gap is kinda off too. You guys ever fight this one?

Remember that the TR3 fenders had a long door version and a short door version. That would effect the fenders also. Are you sure of the year of the fenders?
Measure your old ones to check.
