TR5/TR250 TR250 Timing?

Howdy all! I just bought my TR250 over the weekend, and while I've grown up owning English cars, I've never been brave enough to tackle timing. Holds some strange mystique for me, I guess. I would love it if some tolerant soul would give me a step by step explanation of how someone with good skills but no knowledge would adjust the timing on my TR. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks so much!

Bill: Do you have the Haynes Manual? They are available as reprints now I beleive.
Anyway there is an excellent picture in there of the timing mark (singular) for Top Dead Center on the crank pulley, which matches that found on on my 68 TR250. They give a dimension (sorry I dont have mine handy) to measure from the mark for static (10 deg BTDC) and dynamic advance (4 deg ATDC). I "eyeballed" mine using the static timing procedure as described in Haynes and the above measurements and it runs great. I am using a rebuilt Lucas 41202B distributor with advance only, no retard.

Bill: The measurements are:
0.57 inches to the right of the mark (viewed facing the engine of course) for 10 deg BTDC, static timing;
0.23 inches to the left for 4 deg. ATDC., strobe timing light, 800-850 rpm, vacuum lines blocked.

Welcome to TR ownership Bill. Check out my post on my test drive of a 3000, after you drive the 250 for a while I'd like your personal feedback. PS I too have the shakes in the front end. PO did a front end rebuild, I have a set of rack bushings & steering col bushing on the shelf to install after the driving season.

Keep us posted on your progress. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for the input, everyone! I did get a copy of the Haynes manual. The weekend promises to be nice here in D.C., so perhaps I'll give it a try -- my punchlist keeps getting longer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

I'll share my thoughts on Healey vs. TR250 in the other thread.

B.
