TR5/TR250 TR250/6 Exhaust

The time has come to order up some sort of exhaust system for my TR250. I have acquired a later TR6 dual pipe manifold on the theory it is better breathing than the single pipe stock unit from a TR250, first question, any knowledge or educated guesses as to whether this assumption is correct?

2nd question, I want a little freer flowing without too much noise, as in louder than stock is OK, but not a lot wake the neighbors when you go for a evening drive loud. I am looking at the Monza system, as well as the stainless steel dual muffler system (similar to the monza setup) that Moss and TRF sell. My thought is to buy the pipes back to the mufflers on the Stainless system, then get my own mufflers, I did this with my 4A years ago and it worked pretty well, the reason for this, money, the stainless mufflers list for a little under $200 each on sale, I am thinking I can get a decent free flow muffler to put back there for much less than than. However, I haven't ordered yet, so any thoughts, wisdome, half baked gas flow theories etc. welcome. Thanks Greg

P.S I also ran a Monza system on my 4A years ago and it was a little loud for my tastes, so I ended up using the front muffler from the 4A system, got the noise level just right but probablly ate up any performance gains

glemon, I used the single pipe on my '70 TR6 back to the end on the tranny, then used the "Y" pipe from a Tr4 bent to shape and hung 2 TR4 mufflers on, Sounds great and not too loud, but does rumble a bit when you let off and the rear pipes run up and in the middle of the car. If you want I will call you and let you hear it, send a PM.

I'm not sure but I thought the ports on the head were not the same. If you have the correct gasket for the head put it up to the manifold and make sure they all line up. Again I'm no expert but I thought the larger single pipe would breath better. I do know for sure that the Monza I had on my car for one season was way to annoying for me. I picked up some ear plugs for a 200 mile drive home. The system on my car now is a Stebro that I just love. They do cost a small fortune now though. I found a 25 year old NOS system some time back

Mallard, as I undserstand it the intake ports differ on the heads, early and late, but exhaust ports are the same. I looked at the Stebro, yes small fortune, too big to hide from wife.

I have the dual ANSA mufflers on mine. Bought them 4 years ago for $400... they are considerably more now (like everything else). I do like them.

The twin sports system, without a header has a VERY nice sound to it and is only a little louder than stock. It quiets right down at cruise, even with a header. Very nice system from my experience.

The large bore single pipes can create more horsepower, but you have to go to a larger diameter than the stock single pipe and the horsepower increase is only above 5,000 rpm.

I had the Monza exhaust years ago and really liked the sound at the time. The car now has the stainless sports system, which has a nicer, more mellow sound.
If you have OD and plan to use the SS pipes, I would suggest having a custom set of pipes bent allowing access to the filter.

Thanks to all, I have done what I planned and ordered the stainless dual pipeps on the sports system back to the muffler, I can't see paying $200 a piece for the mufflers, I guess it figures to more like $300 for the pair if I had bough the whole system, I think I can match up a set of mufflers for less than that, I have started to look online.

By my calculations (area of a circle = pi * r (squared)) the stock dual 1.5 pipes have 3.534" square inch total pipe area, and the 1.875" single pipe is about 2.76" square inch, so the dual system is theoretically higher capacity.
