I am working on brakes and I am wondering how much is the right thickness of the “substance “ on shoes?

I have not measured it, but I would estimate they come new with between 1/4-3/8". If checking for wear, you are looking for what is left to the rivet heads, if original riveted linings. If they are re-lined and bonded linings, you can go deeper, to about 1/8".
