TR2/3/3A TR2/3/3A Steering Box Mod

I've just installed a modified steering box cover to the TR3A and what a difference it makes. Mine had just enough wear on the steering gear that I could not get rid of the excess play w/o causing some binding.

The modified part uses a spring-loaded pin in place of the solid adjustment screw so pressure is maintained on the rocker shaft assembly yet there is enough give to eliminate binding. Now I have almost no play in the wheel yet a normal 'rebound' when coming out of a turn.

The part is available from Herman van den Akker handhvan@msn.com for $65 + shipping. Herman will need your old top plate for a core... the replacement is a modified original steering box cover. Looks almost identical to original, the only difference is a 9/16" adjustment screw instead of the original 7/16" as it has to be machined out to accept a spring & plunger.

No financial interest -- just a satisfied customer.

I'm glad to hear someone has installed and enjoys this steering box improvement. I'm in the process of restoring my TR3 and read about this spring loaded steering box cover in the TR3 performance book. I purchased one from RevingtonTR, but as of yet have not installed it. I'm very happy to hear it's an improvement. For those who don't want to send your cover away, Revington sends complete units without exchange. Also, depending on currency exchange rates, I bought mine last spring for 53.00 including shipping. I don't know what the price would be at this time.
I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in steering.

Geo, glad it worked out and as they were just around the block from you made it a lot easier. When I take down the steering in the Roadster this winter I will send mine off. Thanks Wayne

About 4years ago I tried Revington's spring loaded top plate, I believe I had to much wear in the box to do any good. I had about 2" of travel left to right. So I went ahead an added R&P and could'nt be happier.

Seems to be $88+ w/o VAT or shipping from Revington. Given the current exchange rate, now is not a good time for US owners to be obtaining parts from the UK.

Geo, it's not so much the price, but the postage for a larger item. Today I got the postage for my complete grill for the Roadster, 92 pounds (about $170), 12kg, somewhere between 26 and 30 pounds of weight. It was a used grill, but happy to find one since the chromer put mine on a 10 horsepower buffer and rapped it around the wheel, all it had was a few scratches around the radiator cap, what were they thinking???
