TR "specials"

Over the years, I've seen a few of these TR2 / TR3 "specials" that I find interesting. Years ago I used to autocross against someone who had one.

While many will ignore these cars as "butchered", many early cars were transformed into "specials" or "runabouts" or (gasp!) hot rods...

Allards, Max Balchowskys's "Old Yellers" and Ken Miles early MG's and such come to mind. Some were modified factory-built cars...others were "home" built.

My old friend Marly Haase, who's in his 80's, can't stand to see an old Ford that's been modified yet he has a really neat Model T "race-about" that he can be seen driving every summer.

Marly sez it's not modified...it's only "changed"....

Does anybody remember a guy named Carroll Shelby who took a rather plain British sports car called the AC and turned them into genuine race cars? I heard that some of his cars are actually valuble...or is it a rumor?

There is a TR owner near Quebec City who just bought his. It looks like a TR3A but is all fiberglass and was raced in the 1960s. It has a D-Jag type headrest rollbar. He doesn't know much about its history. The doors and boot lid don't open.
 
I think that a narrowed single-seat open wheel smallmouth car would be cool. Retaining the cut-down doors and cockpit shape, boot and bonnet shape. Just narrowed and no fenders. You'd have to straddle the driveshaft, I reckon.
 
If you like that appearance, just wait and do nothing.

With TR fenders and inner wheel arches rusting out like they do, all our cars will look like that if we're not careful.

The nicest one I have seen was built by Jeremy Rivers Fletcher, son of the famous racing driver, and his wife Yves.
It is based on a GT6, not a TR, and has a homemade ladder chassis and fibreglass body which looks like a 1950's single seater.
Both husband and wife drive in a hillclimb series and I have some excellent pictures of big opposite lock slides but do not know how to post them.

Hmmm... Wonder what to do about the steering column.
 
There's an Australian who just took delivery of an all-aluminium body for a TR2 which he is going to mount on a tubular space-frame for the TR2. It will be a fast car when it's finished. His engine block is alloy too.
