Ok, I know this will sound nuts, but I found a bunch of notes from some English friends back in the late '60's and for some reason did not hit the gray matter until I was going through this stuff on these cold rainy days in NC. Turns out they said that any car with a Lucas system regulator and generator all had the same flaw, the regulator needed an extra ground wire as the wiring harness wire was to small and many a generator had burned up because of this. I don't know this to be the gossel acording to St Lucas, but it can't hurt. Wayne
 
The generator grounds itself to the engine block(if properly installed) Most failures are due to wear and tear due to lack of lube. Any fresh unit should be carefully dissasembled and checked over for fatal flaws. Then re-assembled with locktite&high temp lube in the critical spots,this will ensure many miles of trouble free service(knock on wood)
